THOM THE WORLD POET: The Daily Poem

Rob Ayling, yer Gonzo Grande Fromage, writes:

"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Thom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied within seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not?"

GATHERINGS
CIRCLES&FIRE OVER STEEL &GAS
Sitting on the Good Earth in counsel of wisdom together
Listening to each other when leaders are not
Moving as in wave,waters,wind
Too late to rail,complain,or vex
Too late for rebellion vi et armis
Every hand shall be held ,trusted, clasped
in trust and truth our Release
No more the Ghost Shirt, coup stick, arrow and bow
Though tipis extend with Veterans
No more the tear gas, pepper spray ,dogs
Water for defense,not offense.
Winter now-the test  -a new Civil War?Trail of Tears?
Has this all happened before?
Dogs and batons unleashed against Civil Rights
No honest help from Authorities
Now is the time for Strong Prayers and Peace

Now is the time for Gatherings.

Gregg Kofi Brown

Rock N Roll and UFOs; The Gregg Kofi Brown Anthology

Review by G. W. Hill

This compilation is tasty. Personally, I wish there had been a bit more range from song to song, but everything here is effective. There is a lot of catchy music. It's very mainstream and rather pop oriented.
Track by Track Review
Chasing Rainbows

There is a bit of an electronic vibe to this song. It feels a bit like 80s music. It's somewhat soulful and very catchy.
How Can I?
Speaking of soulful, this has such a cool groove. There is some funk to the bass line. This is perhaps mellower than the opener, but I like it more. It just feels a bit meatier.
All The Way For You (unplugged)
I like this. The guitar sound is classy and the vocal hooks are accessible. There is a real jazzy kind of vibe to the cut.
Nkosi B
There is definitely a healthy helping of funk in the mix here. It's another classy tune.
Open Up My Arms (unplugged)
An energized piece, this really feels like an alternative rock hit.
Shadow
This is one of the best cuts here. It's a fusion styled number that's very catchy and effective.
Tender Eyes (unplugged)
Another mellower tune, this is an accessible piece that works well.
This Guy
Here we get another killer funk tune.
Wake Up In The Morning
While this acoustic guitar based cut isn't a big change, it's very strong. It's another highlight of the set.
Whisper In The Wind
This isn't a big change, but rather a fusion-like number that works well.
Listening To You
Here's a cover of The Who featuring the cast of "Tommy." This is a bit on the electronic side. It's too theatrical for my tastes, but it's okay. It has a real dance mix kind of thing going.
Freedom's Ring (unplugged)
Jazz and more are featured here. The vocal arrangement is multi-layered and so cool on this one. There is a lot of world music built into this thing.
Summer Rain (unplugged)
Here we get another mellower piece. I like the vocal hooks on this. It's a strong tune.
Freedom's Ring (the groove mix)
I think I like this version of the song better than the other one. It really does have a great groove.
Take Your Time
This is very much an electronic styled groove. It's cool stuff.
Tricky Situation
A mellower cut, there is a lot of jazz in the mix of this.
Perfect Rainbow (unplugged)
I like this version of the opening tune, too. I'm not sure if I like it more than the other version or not, but it is cool.

INDIGENOUS REVIVAL
RECENTLY,INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES'
were placed on an ENDANGERED list.
This means actions need be taken to locate, understand and retrieve
languages of the people and lands beneath our changed Empires&borders.
For some,it may be too late-no native speakers of ancient languages exist
for Raetic,Etruscan or Lemnian(part of the Tyrrhenian language family)
Agglutinate Elamite was once spoken in Mesopotamia (along with Sumerian &Akkadian),
but its pictograms  and logographic symbols pre-date Sumerian cuneiform, and remain lost to us.
The Hittite Empire of the Mitanni Kingdom spoke Hurrian. We cannot translate .
Ancient Vinca ("Old European")pre-dates both Sumerian Cuneiform and Egyptian hieroglyphics.A mystery!
The Siculi of Sicily came from Liguria or Latium. They spoke Sicel. We cannot translate.
Same with Ainu from Hokkaido.Even using Japanese Kana characters, its meanings are lost to us.
As are Sumerian cuneiform meanings.BUT Basque languages survive because they are still spoken!(Unlike Etruscan)
North and South Picene was spoken by the Picentes people of Italy. They have long gone.We do not understand Picene
The secret is simple-do not exterminate indigenous.Languages are lost to us when their speakers are muted,
whether by death or proscription.Let living tongues wag in diversity and oral vernacular.
Let us learn from our elders and ancestors.Always, often and well-let us listen, preserve and tell our children
the many ways speech protects and preserves our genetic, linguistic and cultural heritages..

"The first prayer is listening. The second prayer is respect!"

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
