Fairport Convention – The Lowry, Salford

Fairport Convention - City Varieties, LeedsFairport Convention – The Lowry, Salford
Reviewer: Matt Forrest
49 years young and Fairport Convention are still touring and wowing fans across the land with their unique blend of electric folk inspired tunes, despite various line up changes the band have maintained a huge fan base. Tonight it’s the turn of The Lowry, for these folk legends to ply their trade.
First up is support act Roger Davies: beaming with pride as he freely admits to be is a little bit star struck to be supporting his heroes. He gets the crowd warmed up with some tracks from his latest album: stand out tracks include Raised On Rock and Roll, (I Think I Hear) Destiny Calling, followed by a beautiful love letter to Huddersfield called Huddersfield Town, you may never have considered a visit to the town, which is the birth place of Rugby League, but after hearing this you may change your mind. Davies clearly is enjoying his support slot and it shines through in his performance, he is joined on stage by the band for the track James Dean, which marks the end of Davies’s set and the beginning of the main event.
The first half of the set is heavily laced with tracks from the bands 27th studio album, Myths and Heroes, this include the title track and Man in the Water. However the undoubted highlights are the instrumental toe-tapper The Gallivant, which saw all the band work in unison, on what appeared to be a good old fashioned folk jam session, and the haunting John Condon: the tragic tale of the youngest soldier to be killed during the First World War aged just 14 years old. The first set draws to close with the raucous Hawkwood’s Army, a tale of pillagers and mercenaries from the 15th Century… standard folk fare.

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
