ERIC BURDON INTERVIEW

Eric Burdon
Eric Burdon, one of the greatest voices of all time in rock n' roll history, speaks about influences, achievements, his new tour, his new book and why he rejected both Jack White and Bruce Springsteen as producers of his latest album "'Till Your River Runs Dry"!
In "'Till Your River Runs Dry" you pay tribute toBo Diddley and Fats Domino. Do you consider them –along with Big Joe Turner, John Lee Hooker and Chuck Berry – your greatest influences?
File:Eric Burdon at Notodden Blues Festival.JPGAbsolutely, along with every artist that was released on an imported 45. I count every one of them as an influence. It was the whole culture that was my greatest influence.
You can hear traces of all of them throughout my work, from the very earliest recordings of the Animals and right up through the latest album. Besides the songs I wrote that were inspired by Fats - "River Is Rising," after Katrina - which I wrote after his funeral - I also recorded "Before You Accuse Me" (Bo Diddley) and "Bo Diddley Special" for "'Til Your River Runs Dry". I still perform ‘Boom Boom' (Hooker), ‘I Believe to my Soul' (Charles) and ‘Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' (Simone.)
attended your show at the Half Note in Athens last year. I really enjoyed your performance, and the band was fantastic. Are you touring again with them? Will you change the set list or your approach on the songs, considering that you will perform in an open space festival?
I always take into consideration the environment and the venue where I'm playing, as well as the response from the audience in real time. The set list changes, as well as the approach to the songs, to keep them interesting for the audience and most importantly, for ourselves. The current line-up for the festival I will have the great Red Young on Hammond B-3, Billy Watts on guitar, Terry Wilson on bass. It's the same line-up you saw at Half Note last year, except we'll have Tony Braunagel, who has produced my past few albums, on the drums, and Wally Ingram switching over to percussion.

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
