BLYTHE, Calif. - Kofi Baker, son of legendary Cream drummer Ginger Baker brings his Cream Experience tribute show to the 3rd Annual Blythe River Blues Festival May 24, 2014. Kofi will be joined by guitarist Fran Banish, who headlined the first Blythe River Blues Festival and played at the second festival last year, and bassist Rob Pagliari.
"It's a psychedelic blues band," he said, describing the show he plans to bring to Blythe.
A top-notch drummer in his own right, Kofi has been beating the skins for over 40 years, beginning as a child of 4 and playing his first gig at 6. And while the blues are firmly rooted in his life, as displayed by his passion for the Cream Experience, Kofi won't pigeonhole himself as a bluesman.
"I'm not a bluesman but a musician," he said. "I play music. Whatever music is good, I'll play it. I'll play anything that is good music; blues, jazz..."
Kofi said a current project he's working on is heavy metal, another genre he enjoys and thrives on playing. He made his point further by pointing out that while Cream's music was heavy on blues, his father was a jazz musician.
"Eric (Clapton) was the blues guy," he said. "But I like the blues, obviously."
Kofi said that while there are differences in personality between his father and himself, the music is where they align.
"Musically, we're pretty much the same," he said.
