A PIONEERING musician and founding father of psychedelic rock is due to make a rare appearance in Winsford.
Daevid Allen, an original member of Soft Machine, and leader of cult experimentalists, Gong, takes to the stage at The Red Lion on Monday, May 13.
Featuring Daevid on vocals/guitar, Mark Robson on digeridoo and Graham Clark on violin, The Magick Brothers are the latest vehicle for one of the most influential – if obscure – musicians to emerge from the 1960s.
As a member of Soft Machine, Daevid performed at London’s UFO Club alongside the likes of Pink Floyd.
But by time his original group were opening for Jimi Hendrix in America, he’d left to form space-rock pioneers, Gong, in Paris.
The band signed to the fledgling Virgin Records label and played at the first Glastonbury Festival.
Following a series of albums, including the classic Radio Gnome Trilogy of Flying Teapot, Angel’s Egg and You, Daevid left to begin a solo career before reforming Gong alongside Japanese experimentalists, Acid Mothers Temple.
He continues to release live sets and one-off collaborations in limited editions on various independent labels.
