COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS: Thom the World Poet

The Gonzo Daily Countdown to Christmas begins today. Christmas music can lift your heart, move you to tears and be a genuinely spiritual experience. On the other hand it can make you want to throw up!

We have asked a whole slew of Gonzofolk for their top five favourite Christmas songs (secular, sacred or both), and will be printing a list, and showing a video every day until after Christmas. Today we talk to Thom the World Poet:

1.MERRY XMAS(War Is Over) (John Lennon/Yoko Ono)
2.CHRISTMAS IS COMING (the geese are getting fat)
3.GLOUCESTERSHIRE WASSAIL
4.SOLSTICE CHANT (Thom)
5.Where The Dickens Is Christmas? (Thom)

WHERE THE DICKENS IS CHRISTMAS?

In these HARD TIMES, it seems best
to have GREAT EXPECTATIONS!
to let joy ring!to sing A CHRISTMAS CAROL
rather than carry a BLEAK HOUSE
like an empty heart's HOUSE TO LET
Happiness is OUR MUTUAL FRIEND
(that is GEORGE SILVERMAN's EXPLANATION)
Live like DOMBEY AND SON-
cheerful as OLIVER TWIST or DAVID COPPERFIELD!
Even LITTLE DORRIT  or MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT knew this-
MASTER HUMPHREY's CLOCK/CHIMES for all of us
There is NO THOROUGHFARE in the BATTLE OF LIFE!
You may balance the HAUNTED MAN and the GHOST's BARGAIN
but in a TALE OF TWO CITIES,it is no HOLIDAY ROMANCE!
If you lost your PICKWICK PAPERS or your AMERICAN NOTES
in an OLD CURIOSITY SHOP,NICHOLAS NICKLEBY would say
it is just like the MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD-or a
LAZY TALE OF TWO APPRENTICES.BARNABY RUDGE knew that!
So chirp and chirrup like A CRICKET ON THE HEARTH!
CHRISTMAS HAS GONE TO THE DICKENS!

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
